This second set from Victor. The reprinted catalogues are small, about 4” x 6”.

Final set: Bettini.
I wonder how many of these large horns were sold, as they seem to be quite rare, these days. I seldom see them for sale.
Cheers,
Tom

Tom, Thanks for sharing the catalog images. Great reference material. I have been looking for the floor stand for the 42" horns. I have and all brass one and a brass bell one.

Interesting that the Improved Gramophone catalog shows a Victor R in the pictures as the Type C. And with a new noiseless motor and improved indestructible records. πŸ˜† I love reading the early sales pitches for phonographs and records.

Great to see these horn support extensions and catalogues. I really like the rare single tone arm support with the elegant double hump shown by Phono-Phan.

It appears that these extended arms were not available in Europe by G&T despite their machines having the same Victor hardware.

I understand the problem with large front mount horns is the extra sideways pressure placed on the needle, causing record wear, rather than the downward weight although a well balanced horn may help.

I have read that about the sideways pressure somewhere, too, but I don’t think the extra sideways pressure amounts to much.
Bear with me: At 85 grooves per inch each revolution moves the needle inwards about 0.012”, or 78/60 x 0.012” which is 0.0156” inward movement per second.
The actual groove/needle movement is narrower than that though; loud passages will crowd the grooves more, quiet ones, less so. Let’s say the needle wiggles ΒΌ of that groove width, or 0.003” side-to-side.
Now, a middle C note of 261Hz, played for one second will move/push the needle left and right 261x0.003” which equals .783” side to side.
The inward-facing groove wall will move the needle just slightly further, .783+.0156=0.799”, so not a lot of difference in stress on the groove wall.
More important, as you say, is a smoothly pivoting arm and I might add, good tracking.
Cheers,
Tom

What a beautiful reasoning... I love those what we call in Spain 'thick numbers'... :D
