Reflections on Stanton's Auction

As always, a great auction with something for everybody. No auctioneer, anywhere, is more cooperative and honest than Steve, and he imbues this credo in his staff. As I get older, they are always eager to help as I schlep stuff in and out (mostly out).

A word about the next auction in April: there is a schedule overlap with a jazz festival in Hastings, and hotel rooms are booking up quickly. The Holiday Inn is charging double what I usually pay. Might go to triple, or more, as time approaches.

I stand corrected. Thanks to a heads-up from Jerry Van, I called the hotel directly and got a special Stanton rate ($115/night). I suggest others do so ASAP as they are low on available rooms. I spoke to Matt at 269-945-0000 and he was very gracious about accommodating me.

The sleeper in the auction was the European toy Berliner. It was found in Berlin in the '60s and owned by Jalal Aro in Paris, who sold it to Domenic. One of two known examples - the other is incomplete... It's beautiful and completely original.

Does "toy" mean a small size, like a toy poodle? Or is it literally a child's toy?

I believe they were marketed for use by the children. I wondered the origin of that machine. I’ve seen advertisements that wrote about them being useful in the nursery
