Quite interesting, but my thought was a re-purposed teak box maybe? Why protect the corners with brass reinforcements, but then have a thinplate horn sticking out?

Why? Because it's from a style of furniture making we called "Campaign Furniture", which was often made from teak and featured brass corner fittings, the intention being that it would travel well and be used in tropical climates. As Jamie said, the box in this instance was probably for a scientific instrument.
