I just checked that Item at E-Bay. What a surprised, that was my article, as if it is an endorsement. I notified the editor os the APN, that published my article, and they will see what can be done.

Hopefully, eBay will cooperate and pull the ad. I think anyone who casually looks at it would probably assume you are the seller! Since you are not, this is definitely against eBay's terms of usage. (I'm not a member of eBay, otherwise I'd file a complaint with them; but I think if enough people do, they'll react.)

First of all I live in Toronto, Canada. the seller is from the US, and the serial number of my Cortez is different.

Unfortunately I am not a member of e-bay as well. I notified the CAPS (Canadian Antique Phonograph Society) that published the APN. I hope they will do something about it.

I see your article information & pictures have now been removed from the listing. Success
The entire description now says-
Brunswick itself switched to a more conventional microphone recording process in 1927, with better results all round. Prior to this, however, they had introduced the Brunswick Panatrope. This phonograph met with critical acclaim, and composer Ottorino Respighi selected the Brunswick Panatrope to play a recording of bird songs in his composition The Pines of Rome.

And still nothing mentioned about the auction machine

I must congratulate you on the CAPS article you wrote. It is a good read & very informative indeed.
I was also pleased to see the original US price of the Madrid included, as I've never been able to find that out myself.
It still surprizes me that there is not more general interst in the Bruswick range amoung collectors.
They really are a high quailty product, and the acoustic panatropes have amazing sound considering the fairly basic horn design employed. I'd imagine your Cortex sounds brilliant.
I wonder if you'd mind telling me the dimentions of the cabinet?
Im just curious to know how it compares to HMVs re-entrant range. Judging by the photos posted here & in the ebay auction, the width & depth appear to be about the same as the 202/203, but the Cortez looks somewhat shorter. Im guessing they are probably around the same size as the medium size 193/194 re-entrants.

Brunswick records of that period tended to be a little be more bass heavy than Victor ones. So that may have compensated for the shorter horn length. Also the Brunswick horn was not folded, so there was far less 'loss'. A folded horn is inevitably the best solution when you've got space restrictions, but it will always be second best.

I know why it's worth so much. As you can see in the photo, it comes with an extra foot.

Edisone really hits the nail on the head, concerning the larger acoustic Panatrope horns such as the one installed in the Cortez --




"I think the horn shape is where the Cortez comes up short. Good reproducer, good tone-arm, okay throat, but then: WHAM! The horn expands HUGELY within a much-too-short length. Any power to the bass notes is thrown away."

Based on what I listened to, in a side by side comparison between a Brunswick Cortez and a Credenza several years ago, that's exactly what's happening.

The Cortez did an excellent job of reproducing the upper range--as you note--but fell short in the bass, and to some extent, the mid-range as well, especially when Victor Orthophonic records were played.

Conversely, the bass-heavy Brunswick (light ray) records we listened to sounded more natural on the Cortez than they did on the Credenza.

Yes, I noticed that my article had been removed from the listing. Thanks to the Executives of Canadian Antique Phonograph (CAP) who acted promptly, my brother in Missouri, who is a member of e-bay, also acted on my behalf, and to members of the forum, who might have contacted e-bay.

I am glad you appreciate my article. To describe the sound, the vocal is front and centre, but not obnoxious, there is enough bass, and it is very loud. The funny thing is, we have a Burnese eleven year old male cat, and he can not stand the loudness of the Cortez, as soon as the Cortez start playing he run out the living room. Cats ears are more sensitive to sound I guess. The sound of the Credenza does not bother him. My choice, I tend to play the Cortez more often.
