Someone posted a follow-up to the technique on the other site. This time there is a before and after audio comparison. It looks like the technique actually works, at least on LPs.

This method was featured last night in the latest CSI episode. "That's how collectors clean their valuable records...". They used hide glue an a supposedly rare Sinatra record, spread it out, let it dry, and then used a box cutter(!!!) to lift it off the record. The CSIs found a few fragments of the resulting glue sheet and were able to figure out the song from it. Still not sure if I would want to try this, but I am sure that now thousands of people will start doing this. It was on TV, so it must be correct.

might possibly work if the glue doesn't bond to the vinyl- the exact record composition could be important.

My wife & kids had CSI on last night and I just happen to poke my head in the room when they were doing the glue thing. I've never tried it, sounds like a good Mythbuster topic. After cleaning the record, Jamie and Adam could see if a clean record can really stick into the side of a telephone pole in a tornado.
Several
Youtube vids on the topic.

Nothing beats hand soap, water, soft sponges and a lot of paper towels. After washing and rinsing, I put the record on the Nitty Gritty machine for a vacuum dry. NB: I do NOT use the Nitty Gritty machine for the actual washing. I've tried it many times and then afterwards gone over the record with a damp paper towel and still found dirt.

Yes and no Torjazzer - you never ever let an edison Diamond Disc come in contact with water / moisture or the record will start to delaminate. (spell check) I tried the white Elmers glue method on a pretty dirty DD and it sucked up all the embedded 100 year old crust. Seemed to work fine but took a long time to get the peel completely off the record.
