This specimen had no defects except being severely oxidized. A hint of brass was beginning to show on the underside. I thought surely it would have to be buffed out and re-plated. My friendly phonograph dealer said, "Watch this" and pulled out a tube of MAAS. He smeared the paste evenly over the elbow and waited 5 minutes. Then he wiped it thoroughly with a paper towel to remove all the paste that he could. It didn't look much better. Then he said, "Okay, now watch this" and gave it a vigorous rubbing with a cotton towel. Wow! It had a nice bright satin appearance with no evidence of corrosion. The rubbing had not exposed more brass, either. I was impressed. That is the only product he uses. I Googled "MAAS polish" and saw thousands of positive reviews on Amazon.
I've found that MAAS does a fine job too. If you've got a metal part with a lot of corrosion though, try Nev R Dull Magic Wadding. It's fine for nickle that has been damp and gone green.
