Yeah, it's probably slow, I had just adjusted it by ear and that usually is too slow, which I find out as soon as someone starts singing and they come out sounding like HAL's cover of "Daisy".

I'm glad you found the problem and got it running. I thought the noise problem happened when it was running after being cranked, because it didn't make sense that it would play a record if the spring was unhooked. Look at it this way - you have gotten good at the dis-assembly and if it happens again, or you get another machine with the same problem, you know how to fix it... Most collectors wouldn't attempt a spring replacement, since it can be hazardous, not to mention problematic.

However - the noise doesn't happen while playing, only while winding. It plays beautifully, just not really long enough for a whole side.
