Have you tried tapping it gently with a block of wood?

I have tried to hit the axle through the housing to no avail, maybe i need to use some more force. Do the ends unscrew? they do have a spot for a flat head screwdriver on each end. which way should I try to hit it through? towards the top with the holder for the turntable or towards the bottom?
