It's fairly certain De Reszke recorded two sided for Fonotipia in Paris, The date was supposed to have been April 22 1905. Things got to the stage where the records were actually given catalogue numbers. But at the least minute, de Reszke got cold feet and decided to veto the issue. P.G. Hurst , who wrote the Collector's Corner column in The Gramophone corresponded with an Australian who claimed to have heard one of the test pressings, but you know how those things go. There is also a less well documented story that he recorded test sides for HMV , again in Paris, in 1908, but I've never seen any proof.
I've heard and read several versions of the Edison-De Reszke story. The common factor to each is that the new Diamond Disc machine was demonstrated to him and he was favourably impressed. From there things go in different directions. One version is story we have here: he evinced interest and was ignored. The other one was Wagner, the London manager asked if De Reszke might be interested in making a few test sides and De Reszke made encouraging noises and then nothing came of it. The outbreak of the War and the closing of the Edison studio in London was the end of the story.
I would love to know.
