If you decide to (temporarily) install a later carriage on your early Gem, so that you can use a B or C reproducer, note that the half nut and feedscrew on the earlier unit are different in thread pitch. So you also need to switch out the half nut, from the earlier carriage to the later one. Make sure you don't lose the original carriage, and perhaps label it so things don't get mixed up down the line.
