Someone on the forum once mentioned that many/most bands do a great job with their various recordings... until someone begins to sing. I hadn't thought about it before then, but ever since, I'd have to say that I largely agree. Several excellent exceptions, of course.

EDIT: I'm referring to 20's/30's jazz bands. :)

I agree completely! Although I tend to think there are more exceptions than most...

That said, my folks at home have routinely been surprised by my gravitation towards more instrumental and instrument-heavy recordings. "Is there singing?" has got to be the most asked question I get by people my age when they hear the music from my collection. They like the music without the singing better, though, and are often disappointed with the vocal choruses!

I think he was so popular in his day, largely due to his voice being of the right register to "record well". Like him or not, he comes across loud & clear.

Yeah, it’s guaranteed to get a rise out of at least one person in every group of collectors when I say it.
