Speaking on behalf of many I'm sure; there is no need for apology, we're all human, and we make mistakes. It's all part of the learning experience. If you could know how many mistakes I've made just in the past year and a half, you wouldn't feel so bad.

Cool info, thanks. Did all the those early 19s have the numbers running down the sides? Did any of the late 250s have them as well?

I was thinking more about the price and description for the buyer being nuts. Only made in 1915. Rare with all rare records!

Hiya Joe, in a word: No. (I assume you are referring to the numbers being present on the drawers, as opposed to the more common strips located at the bottoms of the shelves of C19s)

None that I've come across, but who knows for certain?

This particular transitional feature seems to have been unique to the C19 model and used (intermingled with the previous style 2-drawer 5-compartment system) before the C19 record storage was eventually changed over to the more commonly recognizable vertical 2-shelf individual-slot system found in so many C19s.

NOTE: I've deliberately tried to keep my answers short and to the point; as many of you know, I'm in the process of writing a series of articles on the Chippendale C250/C19 to be published beginning this fall in the journal of the Antique Phonograph Society's The Antique Phonograph, and I don't want to "muddy the waters" -- so to speak -- with too little (and potentially confusing) information given in these posts. I think that would be irresponsible of me to do at this point.

...And as one who has been privileged to see Fran's drafts and illustrations, I'm very much looking forward to seeing all this information available to collectors. The Chippendales (C-250 & C-19) are excellent machines commonly found in collections. Fran has uncovered (sometimes with the help of this forum) lots of information that has never been in print before. It's fitting that in this centennial year of its introduction, the Chippendale is the subject of an in-depth study (probably a 3-part article) in the pages of The Antique Phonograph. Fran's research goes far beyond what's in Frow, and I guarantee that we'll all learn something more about a machine so familiar to us!

Thank you for the kind words, George. I'm grateful for all of the help I've received here on the board! It still amazes me how much there is to know about the Chippendale.

How deceptively simple it appeared to me when I started down this path nearly a year and a half ago!

I hope others will build upon the knowledge base long after my work disappears. I never thought I would become as obsessed with just one model of talking machine as I have with the C250, its' predecessors, and its' successor.

In the spirit of sharing my own personal info (as you all have done for me ), I have an entry to the database; a C 19 I brought home last week from a local Salvation Army store:

1. Model Designation: C 19

2. Serial Number: SM-172,249

3. Bedplate Pinstriping: No

4. "Official Laboratory" Medallion: Round

5. Exact Wording of the Medallion: Diamond Disc Phonograph Official Laboratory Model Thos A Edison

6. Record Storage: 2 Shelves

7. Cabinet Wood Type: Mahogany

8. Duncan Stop?: No

9. Dealer Tag: None

10. Original Dated Sales Receipt/Shipping Documentation, etc.: None, but Factory No. 19 sticker is serialized -- 18754

11. Grille cloth? Color? None

For those with C-19's, please supplement the above information to include the following addendums to the list of criteria that I've asked for previously:

12) Is the reproducer, horn throat, and other hardware on the turntable gold plated or gun-metal? "Gun-metal"

13) Is the record storage door held open by a rod at the top, center shelf or the bottom of the cabinet? Center

14) Are the numbered strips for the record storage 1-36 on both strips or 1-36 on the top strip and 37-72 on the bottom strip? Top shelf 1-36, bottom shelf 37-72

15) Does the governor have 2 springs or 3 springs? 2 springs

Pictures aren't neccessary, but you're welcome to include pictures of your own personal Chipendale, if you wish.

I don't think it would help if all of the machines listed on eBAY or Craiglist suddenly appeared in this project.
