Thank you for the clarification Henry, and thank you to everyone else who so promptly replied to my "newbie" questions. I suppose the best thing for me to do now is to actually take the speed indicator dial apart and try to remove the corrosion? On the other hand, I wonder if that's a bad idea since it is possible the mechanism could be damaged further when I dis-assemble it. If anyone has any helpful tips on that idea please let me know.

I will either post an update to this here or start a new thread with a new subject line if necessary. It is going to take a few more days of tinkering I suppose.

You won't damage it. Take it apart, clean it up good and lubricate it. You will probably figure out what is wrong. You have nothing to lose but time.

Have you figured out your speed control problem yet?
I started to take mine apart because it is tight. You may be missing the spring in yours. The spring keeps the inclined round piece that moves the lever tight against the adjusting screw in the middle of it.
Does that help any?

I did take it apart and it was easy to do. All it needed was a tiny drop of oil in the knob shaft and it freed right up. Most of the control os made of brass except for the adjusting screw and the spring. When I get further along on my project I will calibrate it.
