This competition was sponsored by "The Gramophone" magazine, and took place in the Steinway Hall (London) on 14th June 1924, i.e. well before EMG's adoption of the large external horn.

Their second placed machine was an internal horn "Magnaphone", renamed "EMG" soon afterwards as a result of legal threats from the National Gramophone Company, owners of the "Magnophone" trade name.

"The Gramophone" magazine was completely biased towards Ginn & Co. from the very beginning even when "EMG" wasn't making anything particularly special for the time. And as for the "beaten" Algraphone, it was the 'Algrette', the smallest and least impressive model.
