I feel the same way. Had I been able to get there on time the machine would not have sold for $100. The other bidder and I would have run it up considerably higher.

I know that you can put in an advance bid on an item if you put it in before the auction actually starts. I'm wondering how that works. I saw that many times Mr. Stanton would say at the beginning of bidding on an item, something like "We have a bid of $200" before the bidding started. My question is, if I for example put in a bid of $500 on the 10-50 before the auction, would the bidding have started at $500, or would it have started normally in the crowd and worked its way up. Say if the present bidders had bid it up to $250, would I have won at $300, or would they have charged me my entire bid of $500?

Stanton's will open the bidding in the usual manner and then bid for you. I have often had them bid for me when I've been unable to get there. I usually win for my bid or just a bit less, but that is only because the bids that I register for items that I've not personally inspected are very paltry indeed. Last year I offered (low-ball) bids on over a hundred items (138 actually) at one auction and only won seven. Of course each of those sevn items was a great bargain.
