I wonder if they had an interruption in their supply of copper diaphragms, and the mica was a temporary get-by ?

Due to the results of long-standing litigation against Edison by the New York Phonograph Company, Edison was prohibited from (among other things) using mica in reproducers in 1906. This at first would have applied only to those components sold in New York State, but eventually all Edison reproducers were using copper diaphragms until the introduction of the Disc reproducers.

After thorough cleaning and lubrication, plus a new belt, the Standard runs fine, playing at least 3 cylinders on one winding. There's a little chatter from the upper gears, but that's to be expected.

The reproducer plays loud, if rather noisy on loud passages: we'll see what new gaskets will do.
