Mark: I've read through the threads on this forum. Most of the advice takes the form "Don't do this on those records" or "That soundbox should never be used on post WWII records." My poor memory can't remember all the ands, ifs, or buts. So I was hoping that I could simplify and play any 78 on any modern equipment because the tonearms are so much lighter. But now I see there are other factors than just the weight of the soundbox. Well, in the meantime I won't play any of the records I wish to preserve. Everything is on Youtube anyway. I play any and all records that I own at any time and they last just fine.I must add that I use only soft toned needles with a gradual taper.

Since posting this thread I have made purchased a few records on ebay and I wanted to share my conclusions. Unless I want to buy a record that is hard to find I try and stay away from those described as V+ or less. I have bought E- records with good results. One record I purchased was so off the mark and sounded so bad I obtained a refund. It looked like it was dug out of a dirt pile in a barn. I still have the record, but it's in real bad shape so buyer beware. I prefer electrically recorded records despite owning a pre-orthophonic machine. They just sound great, but more expensive. I wish I could buy Edison records on ebay, but the jazz bands I like are in high demand which demands higher prices than I am willing to pay. I'm attending Union this year for the first time and I hope to find some records for sale. Good luck with your record search.
