Re: Herzog Record Cabinet Restoration
Ken;I did indeed line the inside of the original horn first with wax paper and then put foil faced tape over the wax paper.I then supported the horn from every direction so that the weight of the plaster going inside would not break the original horn. Plaster was then put into the horn a section at a time until it was filled to the top. I put large pieces of styrofoam in the middle of the wet plaster to take up some space so not as much plaster was needed. When the plaster was dry, I simply turned the horn upside down and gently worked the original horn off of the plaster mold It came loose fairly easy.Phono-Phan wrote:Awesome job!!! I know first hand of the work it takes to make these horns. I have made the cylinder machine cabinet horns and it takes a lot of time.
I am wondering how you were able to cast the original horn. Did you line the original horn with plastic and then pour the plaster into it? Did it come out easy?

.
That is a Seeburg "C" that I restored about 10 years ago. I always loved the look of the C and when I got this, someone had sprayed the entire cabinet black. It took much longer to restore than the Herzog cabinet!

Re: Herzog Record Cabinet Restoration
Fantastic job Bill, very impressive, you have me motivated. Were there two sizes of these record cabinets or are they all the same size.StL Bill wrote:Now that I have the plaster form made, I will be making these horns available to anyone lucky enough to have one of these cabinets and is in need of a horn. The same is true of the record racks for any Herzog disc record cabinet. Thanks to all who have been interested in following this restoration from the beginning. Bill
Email sent for details on the horn.
Again beautiful restoration.

Dave and Lerria; Thanks for the kind words. The restoration is done on both the record case and the Berliner phonograph. Thanks to two very kind members of The Forum, I was able to acquire both an original J reproducer and an original crank. The horn has had all of the dents and bends removed and is currently being polished and lacquered. It should be done by this coming weekend, but I will be out of town for two weeks starting Monday and probably will not have time to post it as a Featured Phonograph until I return . I am going to get out of this cold and head to Florida.
