I was wondering about the tube & the Victor myself.
The tube being connected to an exterior horn makes sense to me.
I never thought about the posibility that the Victor was a trade-in. I thought it was either a new line to be sold in the shop as the disc machine would have been gaining popularity around the time this photo was taken, or I thought it might have been there to demonstrate the inferior sound quality of discs compared to cylinders :
Victor and Edison in the pre Diamond Disc era had a sort of
entente cordial in that dealers often sold both lines. I remember reading a communication from the Victor Company to Edison on the eve of the Diamnond Disc to the effect that's things have been so great between us so far: don't mess it up by going disc....
Which I think was a nice way of saying " our legal department will be going over that A 250 with a fine tooth comb"

Great picture Shane! Think how great it would be to discover a NOS just like on the photo full of phonographs, cylinders and horns. And just keep everything yourself
And here is another of my favorite phonograph images

I think we all could choose 100 cylinders & a stack of horns, and there'd still plenty of left overs.
Shane, That is one of my favorates too!!I often wonder if thats the H&S Staore? I got the photos of my Ipod last night, but the programs name is over the pictures because again it was just a demo... But there is at least one other picture that i really like.

Jim,
A good example of the quiet understanding between Victor and Edison was the exclusive contract that Billy Murray signed with both companies. Murray recorded exclusively for Edison and Victor starting in 1909 and subsequently renewed the contracts through the end of 1918.

That tricycle is a helluva lot more interesting than the phono sitting on the seat. Is that a sprocket and chain on the handlebar? And how about those floorboards where the pedals should be. How are the wheels driven? Curious minds want to know.

Gshane-
Indeed it was me who posted that image, after I saved it off of somebody else's post. I was going to post it here, but you saved me some work. I swear I am the reincarnation of whoever's room that was! I still have that photo as my desktop on my computer.

The third one down is of Julius Block, whose cylinder recordings, mostly from Russia in the 1890s, were featured in a great 3-CD set recently from Marston Records.
