If there is a first time attendee who is looking for an Amberola, my listing in the Yankee Trader section is still valid and I will make a deal for a first time attendee.

It would be nice if there was an orientation presentation for new collectors who are attending.

I don't know how anyone could do such an orientation. There is no selling at Union prior to the doors opening early Friday morning. Once those doors open it is exciting phono chaos. The first time I went I felt like a tiny fish in a huge ocean. Now I fit right in. Nobody has time to talk to a group to give even a brief overview of what to expect. But I personally always have time to give my opinion on a machine or other purchase. The purpose of this thread is to give a little help to new attendees and it's the best presentation I can offer.

Most first time attendees have an idea what they are hoping to find. Let's say you are hoping to buy your first front mount Victor. You've done your research, talked to fellow collectors, and watched what sells on the Trader. You decided that you would like to find a front mount Victor R or E. You also know that you're not a project collector so your search is focussed on a nice complete machine. You've also done your homework and know a fair price range. You also should know that you're not the only collector looking for a nice front mount Victor. When you go through those doors you are on a mission. When you see a potential machine ask questions.

1- Is the machine all original?
2- If not what are the replacement parts?
3- Can I hear it play?
4- What's your best cash price?

If the answers to the above questions are acceptable pull the trigger and make a purchase! If not keep looking. If the answers are acceptable and you decide to keep looking please know the risk that your potential purchase may not be there on a second pass through the sale. I've seen this happen many times but you may be lucky. If you're just not sure ask the opinion of a more experienced collector. There is nothing wrong to ask a seller to hold an item for five or ten minutes tops. I'm never so busy that I can't help a friend or fellow Forum member. I hope this helps. Class dismissed!
