As far as I know, these motors are operated purely by induction and a governor in the normal way---there are no idler wheels. Thanks for the confirmation Chunny. Like Andy, I was very pleased to see that it was you who bought the great double turntable set-up mentioned previously---magnificent and potentially very useful for your DJ work I should think !

At present, I have limited experience of operating a 201 but one piece of advice, which was given to me and which I should like to pass on, is in relation to the auto-start. Sometimes I have found that the turntable will only begin to revolve by hand spinning, after which everything works normally. I am told this can be a feature of the induced magnetism and that the problem will solve itself if the motor is left running for some time--it apparently re-magnetises itself and should then start of its own accord once more. I have not tried this but pass on the tip for what it is worth.

Here's a Garrard catalogue from 1953 (in five parts). Granted, this is outside the normal date range of our hobby, but it puts the 201 into context near the end of its production span of over 20 years - and at a time when Garrard were still, perhaps surprisingly, producing spring motors! See pages 10 and 11.

According to the Bank of England's inflation calculator, the price of the 201 after purchase tax was equivalent to about £630 today!

Orchorsol: Did you happen to receive a copy of the mounting template for the 201? I have a 201v that I plan to install in a new mounting board in my Expert Junior.

For anyone else, my 201v arrived inoperable. My cousin, who repairs electric motors, has indicated that it would be beneficial to have the service notes for this motor. Would anyone have such a thing? I would be most appreciative to hear of that.

Sorry Don, no on both counts - I checked and I've uploaded everything I have relating to the 201 in this thread.

Don, you may find this thread helpful when installing your new motor. In particular, use of the overlap tables is essential for optimised tracking :

From memory, the distance from the tonearm bearing centre to the motor spindle centre should be 11 ½" for Expert Senior, Junior and Minor tonearms (they are all the same)---the All Range may be slightly different (½" longer) but not by much. Quick use of a protractor will confirm the optimal spindle location. If in doubt, I would first make a dummy deckboard to experiment with different motor positions to enable easy tracking readings. Accuracy is only guaranteed when the needle point is lying on the record. Length of needle extension will also affect tracking.
