I would recommend Liquid Wrench, or another penetrating oil, over WD40. The latter is more of a rust preventer than a solvent.

I used Liquid Wrench, although if need be I have Kroil to apply.

Any suggestions on how to best apply heat? The penetrating oil has not made much difference at all. The pulley and collar are not even budging. Looking at the condition of the parts, it appears the previous owner could not get them off either and really wailed away at them. If heat won't work, I'm inclined to just take this to an expert who can remove them. Hopefully someone in the DC/beltway area!

I recently used heat to free up the clutch on my Triumph (thanks again Wyatt).
I used a small torch that uses a disposable butane lighter as a fuel source,

Maybe you could get one at a local convenience/dollar store?

You could also use a small propane torch but you'd hve to be more careful because of the higher temps and wider flame

My last resort is the old vice grips.. Use a rag or heavy paper on the pulley and put the vice grips on. Do not put them on the mandrel.. If you screw up the pulley lightly,and you will, you can accept the damage. If it has major vice grip slots on it you can get a pulley for the machine from a lot of places for $30.00 and up. E bay, George in Mich. , absco, Wyatt's can sell you one. You can go to Wyatt's and view there catalog for a price on the pulley or other Edison parts. Good luck it can get frustrating . Also if you have a Ace hardware store nearby they might have some products to use. You can tie up a lot of money in lubricants . Someone suggested Krill's oil which is avaible on amazon and that is excellent to use. Good luck Take your time. Tom B

Well, here are the top works after a lot of cleaning and tinkering. Not perfect but well I haven't worked on one of these in a long time. The 2/4 gearing is a bit of a pain to install and then adjust so it works as intended, but I managed to get it working.







Motor turns over but needs a nice degreasing and lubrication. That will probably be next weekend.

Great job looks good..... There might be an Edison shrink out there for you to alleviate your night mares.. I sometimes need one for the repairs too. It is nice to get something that old going again so it is worth the effort You have now got something over one hundred years old working again. Tom B

Kroil is the best....but pricey...

Liquid Wrench will almost do the same thing as Kroil..and is cheap!! Great stuff!!

PB Blaster sucks, and makes a mess with its white residue!! Forget that!

I'd rather use WD-40 than PB Blaster any day of the week..
