Dave,

Your experience sounds consistent with common practice in talking machine factories a century and more ago. Minor changes in design were seldom cut and dried beginning with one serial number and consistently applied from that point onward.

Factory reworked machines wouldn't need a new serial number - - in fact, that would have only caused confusion.

Your on-site observation may possibly prompt someone here to begin collecting electronic scales!
