Well, it would appear, as if the internet has helped out a lot of people.
Hey Credenzaowner: Do you miss the traveling, and hunting for records? Or do you still do it?

Re: Internet & phonographs I can only relate to myself & I didn't get into this hobby until the Web was available, well World Wide

It has helped me tremendously, if it hadn't been for all the friendly, helpful people at the various boards & dedicated websites, I probably hadn't learned more then 10% of what know now.
Same thing goes for records & machines in my collection.
Another hobby of mine that I have been into much longer & that is somewhat similar to this is record-collecting of mainly old blues & 60s psych.
And there I see a very big difference from the pre-internet days.
Records are so much easier to find, information is readily available to everyone with a computer.
You don't have to listen to a 7th generation copy of a rare album handed down from a friend of a friend of a friend..
You buy a CD-reissue for $8 on Amazon instead.
Some older guys complain about it. "Its lost its charm nowadays"
And in some ways I can actually relate to their thougts.
10 years ago there were a bunch of really great record shops in the city, all with their own specialities.
The owner would call you when they got something in that they know you liked.
And when you've gotten to know them, they'd let you have a look in the bootleg boxes behind the counter. The Treasures I've found in those grimy boxes!!
You could trade & haggle over prices. Let them make a copy of Your own Special bootlegs & get some other goodies back in return.
Now there is only 2 really good shops left.
The internet killed the other ones off in just a few years.
If you just have the money today, you could easily have a seriously impressive old blues collection in just a years time, using only eBay, auctionlist sites & special online dealers.
A collection that would have taken 25 years to sum up, 25 years ago, no matter how rich you were. Sort of takes the charm out of it.
On the other hand, I certainly don't want to get rid of any of my machines & records, & many of them are found online.
To sum it up, the days of yesterday certainly had its charm, but you just can't stop evolution (even if my wife sometimes think it's what I'm trying to do
when I sit in my 1910 chair, reading Joseph Conrad in the light of my kerosene lamp, listening to the Victrola....)
So, enjoy the evolution & soak yourself in the wealth of the Web!
I know I owe a lot to it!

But that's not beer in that photo . . . it's Bud Light!

I'm all about the journey!1926CredenzaOwner wrote:It's not the road you take, but the destination you make. In this case, it is quantity over quality. That's a 1944 HMV 102 with a 5B playing while I imbibe... does that make up for my poor choice of intoxicant?JohnM wrote:But that's not beer in that photo . . . it's Bud Light!Let me put it another way: Money that could be spent on better beer is usually spent on better records!

Well, not to go too far off topic, my daily dose of beer is usually Miller Lite. On special occasions, nothing beats a nice local India Pale Ale though, but at $12 a six pack and my ability to finish said six pack in a couple of hours, I mostly stick with my standby! If I were richer, the story would be much different....
I'll keep this on topic by saying there is usually some sort of phonograph playing while the beers are flowing...
