If you haven't yet traded him for this machine then get it! It's not a factory finish but it very much appears to be a professionally done paint job which looks to be as old as the machine. Of all the aftermarket paint jobs I've seen this one is by far the nicest!

Estott is right. The VVX is not an interesting machine, but this paint job actually makes this victrola worthwhile (in my opinion anyway). Go and get it! If I had the chance I certainly would!

It looks as if antique green was popular- I have several 1920's Oneida silverware chests decorated in a similar color and I've seen sets of painted furniture. Chinese red was also popular.

I suppose it was just the taste of the time. I've had a few pieces of furniture from this time period (beds, tables, magazine racks) which were painted this color.

I wonder if people in the year 2060 will be looking back at the hideous "country style" crap from the 1980's and saying "Why is it always painted blue? And why is everything decorated with geese?"

this is really another instance where posting actual photos - rather than links to them, which expire - would be a very very good thing... particularly given the conversation about painted cabinets (as original, factory jobs, aftermarket work, or modern antiquing). without the photos (and once the rest of the links to craigslist expire), this thread will be useless.
