File an appeal.
They're not supposed to do this if they can see an item is in transit online.
I took your advice and filed the appeal. No answer yet.

Please keep us posted. I have seen this work before, especially in cases like yours when the item is visible online as being in transit. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Well George, I took your advice and filed an appeal. Big mistake. Here’s why: the item is still in transit. They denied the appeal and furthermore told me that only one appeal is allowed, so now even if it gets delivered, I am SOL.
My only recourse at that point will be to dispute the charge to my credit card, which I may do just to annoy them. It could lead to an account suspension, which is OK, as the account I used is disposable, not my main eBay account.
The amount of money involved is a pittance ($48) compared to what I usually deal in, but it has educated me as to the pitfalls of using USPS these days with eBay sales. I have suspended all USPS shipping and am using FedEx exclusively, both domestically and internationally.

That's a new one on me. Yes, you only get one appeal but BECAUSE the item still shows as in transit that's the reason for the appeal!
A**holes.
They have a business Facebook page- go on there and get someone's attention. Don't let them get away with this. If I were you I'd also contact the concierge for my main account and see if they will help.
If you can't get anyone's attention on FB (which is unlikely) go to the eBay Forums and post your complaint. I'll direct you to where it is and which eBay employee to "page" if necessary.
I know it's all a giant pain but please don't let this go.
You mentioned no longer using USPS because of this. Unfortunately, USPS is not the problem here- eBay is. ALL carriers are running late from time to time during the pandemic, so if you have a late parcel using another carrier, the same thing will happen.
Also- check your buyer's feedback left for others to see if they have a habit of doing this.

Yes, the "Ebay for business" page has been recommended to me but multiple sources. Do follow up with them.
