Gung-ho late bidding is all well and good but carries high risks with it! I've bid on many auctions in the last 5 seconds with a bid typically 2 to 3 times the current price achieved and as JeffR1 has said, you only pay whatever the Ebay increment is above the second to last or highest bid.
Great, but......in a few auctions I've won someone else has done exactly the same thing and slammed in a very high "**** you, I'm having this!" bid so I ended up paying way over the odds.
There is no perfect and predictably reliable way to bid on Ebay. All methods carry equal risks.

Still 3 days left, others will come in right near the end that have never shown up yet, I bet it will reach 4 or even above that.
I would be surprised if it hovers at 3.

Looks like the seller got cold feet and cancelled the auction, or he sold it on another sale.

I was bidding to show interest and planning to bid to win this machine. I guess someone does not like to play by the rules of an auction.

Re: Victor V in Mahogany ?
If eBay allowed cancellation of the auction, then it was OK under their rules. Sellers do have that option, just as buyers may retract bids. I don't run auctions, and had nothing to do with this one, but assuming nefarious intentions is jumping to a conclusion that may be wrong.Skihawx wrote: Sun Feb 13, 2022 7:28 am I was bidding to show interest and planning to bid to win this machine. Re: Victor V in Mahogany ?
I agree with you. It always bothers me when a buyer contacts a seller "offline" with a high bid/offer and then the seller "cancels" the item. There may have been numerous buyers waiting to place their bid in due time that are then left out in the cold. No fun.Skihawx wrote: Sun Feb 13, 2022 7:28 am I was bidding to show interest and planning to bid to win this machine. I guess someone does not like to play by the rules of an auction.
I guess there is that .0001 % chance the seller had a legitimate "not influenced by money" reason to cancel the auction.... but I would be surprised.

Re: Victor V in Mahogany ?
Why would following the eBay rules be less than "legitimate" ? There are other valid reasons auctions may be canceled by a seller. eBay is a marketplace with lots of land mines for sellers and many would prefer not to step on them.Granby wrote: Sun Feb 13, 2022 11:34 am

Re: Victor V in Mahogany ?
I contacted the seller and asked him what happened _ he got cold feet.
I gave him a link to this thread and asked him to list it as "Buy It Now".
I suppose if it were my machine, I might have done the same thing.
He claimed that it was owned by the Landay Family _ interesting...

Re: Victor V in Mahogany ?
My choice of wording ["legitimate"] probably wasn't the greatest....
I guess if the seller had canceled the auction for a monetary reason, they were well within their right. But, it does make it a little annoying for interested parties who were waiting until the advertised/documented "end time." But, it is 2022 - all is fair at this point in the business world.....
Thanks to the fellow forum member in this thread who took time to contact the seller, we now know the auction was cancelled due to "cold feet." And, how cool is that know there is a Landay connection! If that can be documented, I may be interested after all.... Even though, I am a humble off brand guy.
