chestnut is a color. #954535 although I wouldn't use it to describe a machine.

Ah, yes, the joys of eBay. Our friend in Spain was unable to clear funds and we've just agreed to cancel his sale with no regrets. Next bidder also unresponsive - so...up she goes again.

After an interesting comment from a new viewer - he suggested that the brass elbow might screw off the black horn, which of course it does, duh...
So I added photos of the unscrewed horn (without the dummy traveling arm screw - turns out the screw hole was at least nice and neat.)

Fun to watch the action, anyway, eh?

Here's the eBay post:

and here's the online photo album if you just want to look at the the pics:

HAH! I just saw a Victor E in a 1948 movie: it's the machine Bing Crosby is trying to sell Emperor Franz Joseph in the movie that is playing on TCM right now - it's called "The Emperor Waltz". The phonograph falls into a water fountain, and Crosby pulls it out and plays a record on it!

I just ordered that movie from Amazon.com. I can't wait to get it. I want to see that scene mentioned above.

It may actually be a slightly different model - the crank is vertical!? Ideas?
But it was a front-mount, with a traveling arm, same case size and design appearance. AND a black and brass japanned horn.
Best,
Heather

Heather,

The machine was a Berliner "Improved Gramophone." A slightly later Victor B&B horn and traveling arm were substituted for the original horn & arm.

Thank you for the reply post, George! It was a very cool scene - and the phonograph actually has a major role in the picture. Bing Crosby chases the Emperor around trying to get him to listen to it and place an order - it's in several scenes in outdoor settings. At one point Bing tries to conceal it by telling some suspicious villagers ( who are in search of the "orchestra" concealed in the woods) that it processes strawberries. He tosses some into the horn and turns the crank...
