just as it is now, of you place it in the corner of two walls, the sound directed along the bisector line, the walls and floor will act as an extension of the horn, and the sound is still greater, as Marco has said. A test of this with a hmv 102 or 101 on the floor in a room corner will show these spectacular results

I see no pain in living with small legs... it helps when moving the machine. if you remove them completely it will be difficult to move and not very aesthetic... The current aspect of the machine is good. Besides that, you could add casters if you wish, not original, but very practical with these machines.
I believe people cut the lower parts of legs because of water damage, flooding, etc. woodworm also typically attacks the legs of furniture.

If it matters, I think that would be a real shame. It looks nice now. If you didn't know the legs were supposed to be longer you wouldn't find its current situation at all odd. However, removing the rest of the legs would make it look altered and strange. Just my take on it.

...but here comes the antichrist of cabinetry.

Since the bottom part of the legs are already missing and are nowhere to be found again, if this were my machine, I'd cut to zero those useless stumps of the legs in order to have the bottom of the horn laying down to the floor. Then I'd put the machine right in the middle of a corner, and I'd enjoy the tremendously increased bass response.

I actually fancied doing the same with my machine in a reversible way, but as the legs' structure is nearly perfect I decided that it was definitely not the case to mess it up. But since the damage was already done to this machine, I would go all the way and experiment with it.

I really don't want to misunderstand all this, when you replied today Inigo, I thought you supported Marco's view on removing completely the rest of the legs. Now I think you feel I should keep the legs, and Jerry too feels the same.

I admit, having been very hesitant to remove the last part of the legs myself, and have been thinking about this matter since it first came up a few months ago in this thread.

I am glad I hesitated before finding the saw. I myself from the start felt bad about removing the legs completely, also because it is part of the gramoophone, and the remaining legs also look good, and as you say Inigo...if one did not know the legs had been removed, and did not know this model in detail, one would not even think about the fact that a part has been cut off.
That said, this will be a very different 163, when it is restored. If I am brave, I will maybe upload some photos, when it is finished, in 2-3 weeks time.

For Pete's sake keep those legs! I can't believe the thought of hacking it down any further exists anywhere.

I'm going to start a crowd funding campaign to restore severed legs from cabinet gramophones. Wish me luck. We need to stop this leg cutting business right now!!!
