how thick are the rubber pads on your machine? I was thinking if I make them a little thicker I can adjust the whole mechanism just a little bit tighter. I'm not sure if that will help or not, but i guess it is worth a try.

I don't have one in my collection. I wish I did. The one I mentioned in my post on the first page was one I saw that belonged to a collector friend of mine that I looked at several years ago. (The video I posted was just one I spotted on Youtube that actually sounded half-way decent to use as a comparison.)
I would guess that the actual thickness of the rubber, based on the photos, is about the same as a heavy rubber band. Something like that would probably work, but unfortunately, that type of rubber hardens over a very brief period of time.
A small dab of (non-hardening) silicone caulk might also work.
I'd also say that, performance-wise, a cardboard type cone would be the one to go with, since the paper, itself, would somewhat dampen extraneous vibrations that might otherwise be transmitted.
