Applying a coat of black gloss paint, as appears to be the case here, is not ebonising.
The ebonising process usually uses an iron compound dissolved in vinegar as the darkening agent. This reacts with the tannin in the wood, forming the black finish which changes the colour of the wood itself rather than just coating it with paint. The more tannin in the wood and the more solution that is applied, the darker the finish.

As for the unproven Beecham connection, would the great man have been content with a Junior?
