Record Drilling Video

I took the liberty of remonstrating with this fellow.

His response? "Virtually no one" (in ALL CAPS, of course) would want to spend money to modify the machine itself (I had suggested replacing the spindle and turntable with something from a regular Columbia - as one option). Furthermore, he insisted that he was only modifying "thrift store" records; at which I pointed out that one man's "thrift store" may well be another man's "collectible"......

I doubt, however, that he'll change his position anytime soon.

I dont blame him really. It's his stuff, & if he wants to drill holes in his records, or play frizby's in the backyard with them, it's his right to do so.
And it's not as if he's destroying important rare historical recordings. I've got 4 copies of that Jolson Decca recording myself, & have seen many more, so there must have been 1,000,000 pressed.
Im sure nobody will find it hard to obtain such $1 treasures for years to come.

Of course, he can handle or destroy his stuff as he wishes to. The problem I see is not someone drilling large holes in generally unimportant Jolson records, but what this video might do as an example to other novice collectors.

Think of someone who has no clue but a Standard machine and a couple of classical Berliners or something equally rare and valuable...

It was probably this attitude in the '40's and '50's that make so many acoustic recordings so hard to find today.

I met an old-timer that used wax cylinders as targets when he was a kid. He would line them up on fence posts and go at them with a sling shot.

Didn't someone make a fitting which was a thick disc with an integral spindle so designed that it fit on the original turntable like a record, except its thickness and spindle thus permitted records with the normal spindle hole to be placed on top of it and then played normally?

"I shaved a black wax recording..." Not intended for recording in the first place!! This is worse than 'Mr. Know-It-All' on Rocky and Bullwinkle Somebody stop this guy.

Hopefully it was at least covered with mold and unplayable when he shaved it...

Hopefully it was at least covered with mold and unplayable when he shaved it...

Um, I kind of doubt all the black wax cylinders are moldy. In this video he talks about buying
big lots on Ebay and shaving them all down. The indestructible German cylinder may be the only survivor from a huge lot since celluloid doesn't shave. I know people can do what they want with their own stuff but I personally feel responsible for preserving historical media and machines while they are in my care. If I sell black wax on Ebay I will block him from bidding.

he only shaves moldy cylinders, he sometimes asks sellers if they have any moldy black or brown wax cylinders in bulk, he buysthem then shaves them for blanks

Oh ok. I guess I was assuming the worst and jumping to conclusions. If they are unplayable than no harm in recycling them for new projects.
