You have to remember that in the days before the Internet and Google, you had some books- if you could find them- about this hobby, or you had the (often) misinformation the oldsters and "experts" seemed to make up as they went along.

I remember for years as a kid collector hearing that the REALLY old records were "the real thick ones". I was thrilled to finally get my first Edison DD at about age 9, and it must have been REALLY old, too, because you could hardly hear anything on it on my GE portable...

I guess that was a common misconception because they probably assume anything with Edison on it came before anybody else because he was the inventor.

Although the machines pictured are not exactly 1890s, but what did they have in 1961 to tell them their machine was a decade newer?

The absolute earliest article on phonos I could find on Newspapers.com. though it’s hard to read but truly historical: November 6, 1877

I think I posted that exact article earlier in this thread. I think my copy of the advertising record is one of their oldest before they worked out all the bugs.
