But what if it was "Al Jolson's" ? :P

One common comment I get a lot is, "Do they work?" or "Do they play?" (The answer is always yes.)

Even though younger collectors sometimes meet with unfortunate reactions, I encourage them to ignore them and enjoy the hobby! I was a teenager when I began in the hobby. As the years go by, I am glad I am preserving a little history for future generations. When I taught school, I took an old phonograph to class. Recently, as a volunteer, I took my Edison Fireside to the elementary school near our home and showed it to the fifth graders. It was a good experience!

Wow I was tired when I wrote this, should be:The average person cannot believe we are into this stuff not for monetary purposes.

I wonder when Eddie Cantors Pathé will show up on ebay.

But I would rather have Groucho Marx's Capehart. :D

I just love Debndunk's ( Gordon )previous posting relating to " If you sell all this stuff ,you could have a brilliant 4 week cruise holiday "
I had that comment myself only yesterday , from a friend's wife.
I thought to myself -- " Why would I want a 4 week cruise -- I would have to mix with socially inept people such as yourself , you stupid cow ! " HA HA !!

Not saying that all people who go on cruises have the same ineptitude towards others of course , but with this particular woman , one must feel sorry I have to say !

"Do you ever play them all at once?" Although, "It sounds like a cartoon!" is probably my biggest peeve. Oh, and "We had a Victrola JUST LIKE THAT when I was growing up!" (pointing at some extremely rare machine). One more: "We had one of them Victrolas that played them real thick records [indicates ¾" with fingers] made of slate/ceramic/glass. They only had one side!"

I suppose they are talking about an Edison DD? Not sure about the slate, ceramic or glass thing though.

Speaking of terminology mix-ups, antique dealers look at me funny if I say I drive a Ford CR-V, yet they are calling their phono an “Edison Victrola”.

I think it's a merged memory thing.

Well this probably fits here.

Great playing stunning antique from Victor Victrola Talking machine VV 220. Truly old fashioned. Hand crank and non-electric. Just crank it up and listen. Sounds excellent for being almost 100 years old. Sound is adjusted by opening and closing the doors. Plus has a dial to spin the record faster or slower. This was really high-tech for its time and is still running strong. Also included are the records (see photo)

The problem is that the records which go with it and supposedly "sound excellent" are vinyl LPs.

:lol:I suppose you could play an LP on a Victrola if you modify the motor to spin at 33 ⅓ rpm. Albeit It would be super quite with those fine grooves, you would loose the fidelity, and you could only play it once as the needle carves out the soft vinyl....but still.
