Checking to see if you ever resolved this problem? I'm having the exact same issue with a edison bc 34 and I assume I will need to just have the mainspring serviced

It certainly can't hurt to have the mainspring serviced. Have you cleaned and re-lubricated the rest of the motor? If not, you should do so while you're waiting to get the spring back.

My only experience servicing a DD spring was with my own BC-34: not a project for the faint of heart.

One other possibility to consider: you could need new springs. My C-250 had a problem like that--speed was not stable, varied all over the place when checked with a digital tachometer, even after having the motor overhauled, cleaned, all the stuff approved by forces for good in the community. Turns out the springs were simply worn out. Nothing has an infinite life, after all, and remember that the original springs in these machines are now pushing a century of winding, unwinding, winding, unwinding.... Had new ones put in, and the speed problems vanished.

Sorry I'm late to this party, but what Cody describes is very similar to what happened when I restored my C-19. In my case it was "drunken governor" syndrome. It was a matter of getting the governor weights to spin themselves back into balance. I followed the directions in the Diamond Disc motor manual and it cleared up the problem.
