Fran,
I'm glad you are going to carry the torch on this project... I was pondering undertaking this myself, but I am such a non-computer geek, that it's laughable...
I am gathering the pertinent info from my two C-19 machines, and will look forward to your new thread.

I think this is a fascinating post, and in response to pughphonos suggestion that someone start a database in regards to the C250/C19 Diamond Disc Phonographs, I've decided to take the initiative and start a spreadsheet and compile pertinent information on the differences and commonalities observed between the two. It is my hope that, through serialisation and original documentation, I can establish dates when significant changes were made along the manufacturing timeline of both the C250 and the C19 over their respective lifetimes.
I will start my own post with my questions, and I hope that everyone here with either machine is gracious enough to help me out with the data gathering.
This is my first large scale historical project, so I need and appreciate your help.
Thank you,
Fran

pughphonos wrote:Fran, this is great news. I think your database will gain lots of support. I'll do what I can to steer people your way and will be on the look-out for machines on-line.
Do you plan on creating a form that people should fill out, or will you just take whatever is submitted and work it in to your form?
At any rate, all best to the Chippendale project. You will probably want to start a new thread to announce it.
Ralph
P.S. If you want to copy some established projects, our very own George P. already is maintaining four databases. My approach with the Edisonics has been much more informal, using a thread and then indexing the various submissions by serial number.
Ralph,
I have a post drafted, I'm just waiting for comments from my proof reader to make sure I didn't do anything boneheaded.
I should have the post up tonight or early tomorrow morning.
I will submit a list of characteristics that people can reply to with their own data, and then I will transcribe that information to an excel spreadsheet myself.
I'm hoping that many will respond, and I will do my best to update it as frequently as possible. I'm assuming this project may take many months, if not a couple (few?) years to complete.
Thank you for the encouragement!

Thank you, Frank! I look forward to doing this!

well, unfortunately I wont be buying a C-250 any time soon, my mum decided it was too big or the beams couldn't support the weight, one or the other

Well, not trying to cross Mum, but the C-250 / C-19 is no heavier than a full-grown man...

I don't think she'd let me have a full grown man in my bedroom either

You'll just have to find an L-35
London No. 1.

I've read that too Fran, and it does not surprise me. Edison was not one to let leftover parts from prior models go to waste.
Alex, here is my oak C-19. It is indeed a whopper! I am 5'11" and when I stand next to it and rest my arm on it, the arm is level. They are very sturdy machines and sound really good. Mine came with an optional Edisonic reproducer. I have mixed emotions about that. It does produce a lot of volume, but to my ear the sound is a bit shrill in comparison to the reproducer that was standard on these machines.
Clay
Clay,
That machine is beautiful !
Do you know if the grille- cloth is original ? I have a C-19 Mahogany that has a similar, gold cloth, which I believe is original.
Frank
I am not sure Frank. I goes perfectly with the machine, but is a bit odd. Basically it is a white cloth with a vertical red thread running through it about every inch. The gold on the front looks to have been applied, perhaps painted--whether home made or done at the factory I can not say. I do have a vague memory of having seen exactly the same thing on some other machines at some time in the past, but it was long ago and I can't recall the details.
