Can't argue with success, but I can recommend something other than WD-40 which may work better: Power Lube (a/k/a CRC-556), available at Ace hardware stores and others. IMO, it's the best for such applications.

If it were mine I'd attempt to lever the lid so the screws from the upper lock plate would tear out of the lid- and do it CAREFULLY.
