Yes that is what will happen. Loosen the set screw that holds the gear to the spindle. Then the turntable and spindle will pull up out of the gear, leaving the gear behind in the case.

Note that the gear could be stuck on the spindle from old grease and oil. But it won't be rusted and can be broke lose.

Very important make sure the motor is run down with no tension on the main spring.

And a GREAT BIG THANK YOU goes to Larry!!! I didn't realise that you could access the spindle, and loosen that screw from the back. It was literally a couple seconds work to remove the platter and spindle. I then loosened the motor screws and lifted the motor board. Then I could remove the motor and the crank extension came easily unscrewed.

One question: the crank extension has a male thread on both sides; this means that the where the crank screws on to the spring winder, is female. I thought that this model had the early flat crank, with a female end. Am I missing a piece, or was I mistaken about needing the early female, flat crank?

I'm beginning to wonder if mine is indeed the early flat crank variation. If you compare it to the one here (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Beautiful-Early ... Sw3KFWdb6i) there are a couple notable differences. My motor has a female threaded winding shaft and mine has a different style of brake on it. Plus, mine has the speed control in the back left corner. It is actually identicle to the one shown in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmS44mWHD5k. Mine has a serial number of “150051 E”; I thought it was still the flat crank version, but maybe I'm mistaken... any input?

Mine is indeed this variation: http://www.ebay.com/itm/201485137078. I guess the serial number information I read was incorrect...
