Definitely an understandable point of view, however it was listed on a national estate website and liveauctioneers, and described decently well, so anybody could've discovered it on their own (in a fashion similar to yours, since you aren't local to the auction house). Also, judging by the other high quality items at this sale, it wasn't going to go cheaply.
Just my two cents, and there's always another machine out there.

I appreciated knowing about it too. I went to see it earlier today and left an absentee bid. Unfortunately it was not enough to win the item. Very nice machine however. I'm surprised to hear about a broken lid prop however as it was in perfect condition earlier today.

Remember the story when I posted a rare cylinder cabinet at a local antique shop? I called the owner and he said he would have them mark it sold. I then get a call from him telling me how sorry he was that it got sold. He said it had been put on some forum, and 3 or 4 people showed up at the location to purchase it. I wouldn't post something I am interested in again. Some collectors don't care about anything except that score.

I certainly agree with what you are saying about it being listed nationally. However, the additional exposure wasn't helpful.

My suggestion is STOP VISITING THE FORUM. I find it very helpful so I intend to continue to visit it and contribute to it when I come across something interesting.

Sorry, but I'm not sure how this "suggestion" addresses my concern. Do you know how hard it is to be a dealing collector, or a poor man trying to build a decent collection without breaking the bank?

I also really enjoy and appreciate posts and threads like this. While I am not in the market for a piece like this, nor am I anywhere near the auction site, I really enjoyed following the thread. Keep posting.

Don't feel too bad. I have had a number of Craigslist purchases disappear after some oh-so-helpful fellow who had no interest or intention of going for the item himself posted them here. I mean purchases where I had made an appointment for the next day to,pick the item up, travelled in to Detroit or Chicago, and found that the seller had been besieged by folks from this forum. It is certainly annoying, though I can understand how it would otherwise be of interest to most out of town collectors. I'm afraid that there isn't much to be done for it. After all it is just a hobby, and we are all SUPPOSED to be having fun.

The hammer price was $2500, plus the 23% buyers premium, and 6% Michigan sales tax. That's $3259 by my math and who knows if this machine has to be shipped which would be extra.
I checked out the machine and the casters had a bit of surface rust, but they all rolled freely. I couldn't find any water damage but only a bit of light (white) mould that I rubbed off with my finger. I would say the finish was original and in very good shape for its age with only very minor defects which didn't take away from its beauty.
The issues I found were the lid support was broken and when I tried to crank it, it just free wheeled so at minimum the springs needed attention.
It was a nice machine, but more than I was willing to bid. I'm sure whoever gets it will be happy with it.
