Yes, Cheney was connected with Marshall Field- he bankrolled the company and it was headquartered in the Marshall Field building. This certainly gave the company a good start but for a high end oddball machine it seems to have sold well as examples are not hard to find. Victor sued them of course but the courts found in Cheney's favor. I don't know when the company went out of business but Forrest Cheney himself died in 1925- if he'd lived longer he'd have seen all his acoustical theories bulldozed by the Orthophonic.

Well, as of this morning, even after sitting all night with some penetrating oil, she still won't move. I'm going to call George Vollema later today and see if I can send him my motor and have him work his magic. This is the first motor to stump me like this, there is some serious resistance in that general area. Even loosening the governor up to try and let it settle in or re-mesh did nothing. There is no slop in any of the gears at all, either, just enough play as there should be. Comapred with my other motor (which is slightly different), everything looks as it should be.

I have a cheney my father bought in 1922 in Detroit, MI at the J.L. Hudson music store. Turn table, arm etc. are identical as pictured. Outside doors are different...oak inlays. Grill and horn are missing and motor needs a new spring. Would like to see other catalogue pics. Also need a parts source. Thanks.
