The episode broadcast on 29th April included the "restoration" of an Edison Opera. Watch it if you can, and weep  .

The Music Master horn was chemically stripped to bare wood, and refinished in a shade which did not match the case, which was left as found. The neck was painted black and re-attached to the bell with glue, no attempt being made to replace the missing brass ferrule.

On completion the sound quality was just as bad as when the machine was brought in. Wow, flutter and playing much too fast. The out of round cylinder played was a tenor singing Gilbert and Sullivan, but he sounded more like one of the Chipmunks :? .

As if the treatment of the Opera was not bad enough, any non collector watching might assume that this is what one is supposed to sound like.
I tried looking for this on the BBC site, and its seems to be the only episode that's "missing". Wonder why?

The lady demonstrating the diamond disc on the link on the previous post may need a little training!

I saw the episode and can say it was pretty bad in terms of authenticity. It was a family heirloom and they seemed pretty happy with it, so oh well

Both the interviewer and the demonstrator also seem to think that an Edison "Re-Creaton" is not an "original" Edison record. I wonder if any Edison employees ever considered this marketing choice of naming would cause this type of confusion in the future.

In that age of rapid technological progress, typified by Edison himself, they probably assumed obsolete old formats would be junked shortly after something new came along.
If you could time travel one of them to the present day, they'd probably ask why we were cluttering up our houses with records and gramophones when we can download a million songs onto a tiny box and play them over bluetooth
