Here’s the photo George sent me of one of the springs... Yup, it’s shot.

If that is the extent of the damage, I would simply snip an inch or inch and a half off the end of the spring, heat it and make a new pear hole, which I have done successfully using the method described in Eric Reiss' book. I don't consider that spring "shot" if that is all that is wrong. Just my 2c.

I agree with AZ, I’ve salvaged two springs so far by doing what he suggested- though probably not as well as a professional. I use the machines I did it in daily and have been working great for almost two years now. But it’s up to the OP on what they feel more comfortable with.

I just feel more comfortable having them replaced with newer stronger springs. Same goes for the governor since I broke two of the springs taking it out.

I agree, replace the springs. It costs a little more but in the long run will be more reliable. Plus, that machine looks like it was well used with a lot of miles on her. With new springs, motor rebuild and reproducer rebuild, and cabinet cleanup it will be good for another 100 years or more.

Don’t see too many oak IX machines. One day I’ll get a IV and a IX. And if I’m lucky, the table top X & XI but it’s probably unlikely I’ll get a XII.

Welp. Good and bad news.

The good news is: I got my motor back for George!!!

The Bad news is: I still need a crank. The JB Weld fix broke and the crank left a nasty mark on the cabinet. : All I need to finally call it a restoration is a crank and Bob’s my uncle.
