Charles: I certainly plan on continuing to make them. I wonder if it is worth keeping the ones that don’t turn out good. They do take up lots of space

With all the awesome feed back I’ve gotten from you guys, I have idea on how to improve my mold and how I make them. I started using strips of paper on the bell portion towards the end. But I get impatient It took at least 30-40 minuets to paste a layer of paper on the bell, if I use strips it will take even longer! BUT I know it will make it stronger. Plus this isn’t a race

Fiberglass has been something I’ve been wanted to experiment with, I think on my next horn I will try that auto body filler

I think I’ll finish this first one and see how it goes. It’s always good to try out different things before the final product is completed. Plus I think I need to work on my mold a little bit. The swan neck isn’t completely straight.

Very good!, these horns have wonderful shapes to them, I'm one of the fortunate ones who get to see EMG's every day, but before I got my first machine I started to do a project very similar to what you're doing now, the project ultimately became too much for my knowledge then, but I was very kindly given an EMG Mk IX horn in poor structural condition which I repaired intending to use for the homemade machine when I bought a HMV 31 and was able to create a poor mans EMG and the DIY machine got abandoned, though I do have a plan to make a straight EMG style horn, like an enlarged wilson horn, intended to be hung from a crane or ceiling and used with a cylinder machine, perhaps just a pipe dream, but maybe if I have the time and space someday!

After you learn the basics, you can marble all of your records...

Well done! I'm one of those with the project only in my mind, and see yours as a great achievement. I think you've done the most difficult part. Now you can reinforce the horn by the outer side, and simply add something to the inside to get it smooth. The conduit shouldn't be difficult. And the base and tonearm could be saved from a parts seller. Any of the big Victor or HMV orthophonic tonearms and soundboxes could work very well. I own a HMV
194, and its tonearm is very long, and has an accurate tracking, so maybe you could scrap a tonearm and motorboard from one of those huge orthophonic/re-entrant machines for completing your project. Kind of what watanabehi in this forum has achieved...
