Very interesting story. It certainly is worth the effort to restore even though it's a huge amount of work.

I'm with you on the damaged veneer. Hopefully you can find someone skilled in "restoring" antique furniture or musical instruments. This would be a difficult one to refinish and hope that it out right.

Again, good luck.

The parts I have replaced were the on / off switch on the motor board (this was badly corroded), the motor board (which had partly rotted at the back - yes thats how wet it must of got, the motor board screws, the needle box holder, the black ring around the base of the tone arm where it joins onto the motorboard and also the turntable (I was lucky enough to find a better one which had its original felt (thanks to Sean for helping me out with that one!), then there was the switch which controlled the light in the record compartment, together with a pile of very rusty screws!

It has taken me a while to track down all the parts I needed - a good number of which required me to buy a junk 10-50 machine located near NY on ebay and ask someone nearby to go and strip the parts I needed out of it for me and post them to me in the UK!

If you want any of the above listed parts please let me know. I still have them all - however they are currently in a shipping container bound for Auckland, New Zealand which is where I am moving to. I wont have access to them until early December.

As by way of an update......

I have had an invitation a few days ago from a friend to be interviewed on his radio show about collecting phonographs / recordings and in particular my 9-55 electrola. He has a 2 hour slot in the morning and I will be there most of it to discuss these on and off over that time. It will be on the 21st October and I will see if I can put a mention in for this forum. Should be fun...and also live

I'll let you know how I get on!

SBH- A live interview? That should be lots of fun although somewhat intimidating. I'm sure it'll all go great.

Quick update, after my encounter with boat anchor guy, I contacted the person in NE OK who did a great job on my
7-26 and he is willing to work on my projects. I'll be going up to visit my daughter next weekend so will take the two RE-45 mechanical parts, for the 9-55, and the Alonzi cabinet I showed, as well as the Stromberg so he can have a look and get started. It'll likely take a while, he was in no hurry on the 7-26, but since it requires a 9 hr drive each way, I'll be able to space it out so that won't be too bad. Plus, it's a great excuse to see my daughter when I'm there.

Thats great news that you will be able to move your projects forward...even if it does take time I am sure it won't be as long as the 5 years for my 9-55! A 9 hr drive - WoW! I forget how big America is. If I dorve for 9 hours here (traffic permitting) I could probably make it from the UK down into Italy in that time!

Yes, the interview will all be live. I will be the "guest" on the show so the main focus will be on phonographs but as it is a general magazine type programme I have been asked to provide a list of my interest areas so that we can talk about other things to! Exciting and also daunting - I haven't done anything like this before so such a long slot will be a baptism of fire! But i'm up for the challenge and looking forward to it. I have also been asked to take a long a cd of transfers from some of my disks that may be incorporated into the show.

The Radio you need is a Rariola 28 However finding the front as in your picture may provr difficult I know of a tuner but there is no power supply chassic. Since all of Victor's electronic componets were supplied by RCA they are int imposible to find. I have contacts tho may be able to help you.

Any idea of what the VE9-55 is worth in excellent condition? It has about 30 records, and a set of headphones with it as well.

I too like the looks of the radio swap you accomplished, much much prettier and clean-looking than the original setup, nice job!
So does your changer work 100%? My 10-50 (same changer) needed several of the pot metal changer parts replaced with reproductions and a bunch of tweaking to get everything working as designed, but ws well worth the cost and effort.

Frenchmarky- Thanks for your comment on the look of the machine. The pot metal parts have been replaced with the exception of the gears. Seems like it works well although I haven't tried putting a stack of records on it yet.
