The thought of that crap coming out of a phonograph horrifies me. But at the same time..... wouldn’t it draw interest from young people if they could listen to their music this way?

With regard to "new" music on "old" phonographs...
The appeal of hearing music from the early days of the phonograph is due (in my opinion) to a number of related items.
1. Its interesting to hear the songs for what they are, namely great jazz and music from famous people recorded at their prime. The songs can be enjoyed on a modern hi-fi after restoration and then recorded on a CD (This is what I do).
2. Great Music from a early phonograph that does not use any electronics for the playback. The limited range of frequencies gives a unique and enjoyable sound to the music when played back on the machines. For example, the numerous "you-tube" postings.
3. Music that is not very good fidelity but played from an historical early phonograph. A number of phonograph collectors do not enjoy the music, but enjoy the early mechanical machines.
People can be interested for one of the reasons or all of them, but in truth the enjoyment of having and playing early phonographs does not always mean that you are enjoying the early music.

I have to agree with you David.
By far, my most viewed cylinder recording on YouTube is "100 yr old Eminem" with over 5,900 views.
I've also got 2 "100 yr old Kylie" videos with a combined view count of 5,200.
None of my other cylinder recording even come close to having that sort of view count, and I doubt anyone elses videos of a pre 1929 cylinder recording does either.
There's no doubt in my mind that modern music on the cylinder format gives our hobby exposure to young people and draws interest.
