I notice that the Schumann-Heinke, version cost a whopping $3!

Also your cylinder appears to be in perfect condition. Surely the box cover would indicate that. You probably know it's exactly the same as my diamond disc, dubbed from the disc. There's at least one more version on Edison, I think only on cylinder, no 16o6 on Blue Amberol, a directly recorded version.

I guess next Christmas we can start a thread just of the various recordings of this beautiful tune.

I think the cylinder may have been new old stock. The box, lid, and cylinder looked untouched when I found it amongst other ones in the same condition. Too bad the rest of them were nothing of interest to me.

This music reminds me of the soundtracks of some of those early cartoons like the Silly Symphonies and Merrie Melodies series I saw on telly many years ago. (I wonder if any of them were influenced by this record?)

Recorded in 1910 (mx 4903-3), taken from this 1919 pressing. Transferred at 76.7 rpm.

Not the only recording of this piece with it titled 'Holy night' without the 'O' that appeared later. Here's a very early electrical recording of it.

it's not an attitude, it's liturgical.

Here's a 1920 Pathé recording definitely aimed at children. It was released on three different records, all 10": the vertical Pathé 20472, and the laterals Pathé Actuelle 020472 and Perfect 11154.

I don't have the Actuelle edition but I have one each of the other two.

These transfers are from my lateral Perfect copy, done at 80 rpm. The high frequency extension and clarity of this record is among the best I've ever heard for acoustic recordings, notwithstanding these are pantographic dubbings from master wax cylinders.

For reference, the matrix numbers for vertical and lateral records were the same but with different prefixes. (The titles are the mp3 links.)
