These are really quite beautiful in real life, as well as having the great sound of a common black 101.
Most that turn up are amazingly tatty. These have a kind of faded glory, which still appeals to many people. The best examples are another thing entirely: luxury, quality, beauty. They shine like a jewel.
THIS would be one of the top-3 items on my wish-list. What stunning craftsmanship and beautiful combination of colour and class...the similarly designed HMV 102 would also be on the list.
I'm mainly interested and fascinated by portable machines, yet although my knowledge of outside-horn machines is very limited, I wouldn't mind having one in my collection.
Beyond that, my wish-list is quite bland compared to the others:
- Victor portable VV-35/55/65
- Columbia Viva-Tonal Grafonola models 160-163
- Decca trench model
- Edison cylinder player (a 2 & 4 minute model...nothing too fancy)
I already have a Credenza, VV-IX table-top, black HMV 101 and Red, Green HMV 102. Ideally I'd get my paws on a Blue 102 as well.
I've yet to join the Toronto CAPS but once I do - and once they start their meetings again - hopefully some leads will complete my collection.
At the end of the day though, it's music that's my ultimate passion and I would hope to increase my jazz & blues collection beyond the mostly throw-away records I currently have.
