I wonder how many recordings that are being destroyed or damaged on yearly basis because of wrong discs on wrong phonographs?

Another "scary" video. This time, it's an Edison Diamond Disc:

Indeed: I stopped in at a nearby shop recently, and found a nice early DD displayed on the turntable of a rather dilapidated VV-VI. My protective instincts kicked in, and I purchased it to save it from being ruined…

Incidentally, it's a good idea to check your machines, in case any of them are possessed…. ;)

I was in a vide grenier (car boot sale) in Limeuil Dordogne last summer and saw a hornless table model for sale. On closer inspection it was composite with an HMV logo, but nothing about it looked right. The guy wanted 70 euros for it. He played me a record, with a very rusty needle and started to play it on the wrong side. I said no - you should never play it that side, and put it on the correct side. As expected it sounded awful. After about fifteen seconds, he stopped the record and put it on the wrong side with a flourish that only a French man of a certain age with a point to prove can pull off. Amazingly it sounded slightly better, but not much better. I didn't buy any of his records.

Why there are so many people who try to play "ye olde 78s" on "Pathé "Victrola""?
I'm sure this is very damaging both to the record and the machine.
if this was a vertical cut disc it wouln't realy mather since the saphire bal is round and the groove is hollow so not much harm is done the only thing that might happen is that the soundbox goes skippertybooble over the disc

but seeing this idiot playing a columbia with the needle in dig mode realy makes my naughty bits twist into a tight nut!!! (outch!!)

And apparently the videographer with the Pathé has not yet discovered lubrication either. :o
