The LPs and 45s to which Walsh refers were introduced in 1948-49 which is over 73 years ago. 73 years back from 1951 brings us to 1878 which was the invention of the phonograph!

Acoustic sound recording will become a tiny blip in the early history of the art. Electronic analog recording overall ended completely by the 1990's and the physical entity (disc or cylinder) itself has become obsolete with the technology of digital signal processing of audio and video, the digital files of which are stored in the cloud.

We must consider how fortunate we are to have lived through this rapid evolution of this technology. But at the same time we should reflect how the technology of recorded sound may have stifled musical composition and performance. That is the reason I like to listen back to these primordial recording artifacts.
