But not "Circassian Walnut", which is (I think) what the original discussion centered on before it went off-kilter.

Now that's marketing..... . Also Jerry, your machines wood (in the pic) is walnut as is yours Raphael (very nice). I'm surprised no one asked why I'm so sure...???. My family has been in the lumber industry for over three generation's. However, if those that feel it's mahogany want to think that......no problem. Glad I could help....  .
I think the point was that it wasn't Circassian Walnut (which it clearly isn't). As a Lumber Baron, what type of wood would you say it is, if not Mahogany?

Well not really. As I wrote before it depends on how the log is cut. I also wrote that at the very least...."American walnut may have been used". This would have been a cost saving measure. I can assure you the legs,etc....are solid "Circassian". look at the cost increase that Victor charged. Do you think it was just for a little veneer??.
During this time period, Walnut (not Circassian) was "relatively" prevalent as was Oak. Therefore, if any of these woods were used as a "secondary wood" and still looks good.....it would be Walnut (American).
Mahogany is a tropical wood. Walnut (not Circassian) is from North America.

This thread has just got out of hand and I feel I'm being attacked. Some members seem to have totally forgotten what my initial post/comment even was. "I believe the motor board in the Victrola that is currently for sale on Ebay may have been replaced at a later date and from a mahogany Victrola".
this is all I want to inform the membership and nothing more. I further (in a later post) stated that "American Walnut" may have been used". All of this is really only my opinion and nothing more. I ask that members who wish to comment read what I wrote in my posts "CAREFULLY"
Here is the very first one again. All I wrote was Walnut..??
I'm surprised that no member (to date) has made mention of the mahogany motor board that has been placed into this machine. Also the machine has the re-sale/re-licence label on the inner back door. Was the motor board/motor changed when the machine was re-sold by Victor??. Somehow I can't see that.
However, to locate a correct board "walnut" today will be next to impossible. Was this a gutted machine back in the day (20's-30's) and at some point a "collector" of sorts placed a board out of a much more common (wood) machine.

BTW, I'm not a "lumber baron". I just grew up with the stuff..... .

Geez, I don't think anybody's attacking you, we're all trying to clarify the situation.

Nobody is suggesting the mahogany motor board from a mahogany machine is correct in a Circassian Victrola. It is a flaw. At the center of this thread is the question about the degree of the flaw, how easy it is corrected, and ultimately how it effects the value of the Victrola. For a long time I have wondered about the more incidental pieces on a Circassian Victrola. I consider the motor board one of the more incidental pieces. Imagine the difficulty in finding a Circassian door or lid. I've always suspected parts like the deck, horn, and motor board were something other than Circassian but I am not certain. That's why I asked the question about how Victor purchased their walnut as veneer or unprocessed logs. If they bought logs, I doubt if the less desirable cuts were scrapped. I would expect they became some of the incidental cabinet parts. I brought the Vic O into the discussion because it shows appearances are not always what they appear. The mahogany appearing Vic O was made from less expensive wood and given a "mahogany finish". Granted, a Vic O was a very inexpensive machine and any Circassian Victrola was a premium machine. So the basis of the thread is the question of Victor using similar tactics with a very expensive Victrola.

The unfortunate part of this thread is when it becomes personal and statements questioning a member's "knowledge", or ability to read and understand, or lack of focus, or the "Lumber Baron" comment are made. In print it is always tough to tell if the written comments are made in jest or are intended as a personal shot. I like and value of our Forum because it seldom gets personal in a negative way. Let's keep the negative out of the Forum.

Amen Jerry! It has destroyed many a forum, and this one is too valuable to lose.

Certainly no negativity intended. My apologies if it was taken that way. I'm sure Wayne knows I was only joking.

Brandon is most correct. Hence the two "  ". What disturbed me a little is the constant "Circassian" issue and the insinuations I keep saying it is. It is important to read posts that are made first.
Regarding what Jerry wrote about whether Victor ordered in just veneer.....Well, the legs and some frontal and side pieces and solid circassian. So, I guess we know that lumber was ordered in. It is still very probable that the correct motor board is in fact circassian. It all depends on how it was cut. I for one would not be too surprised to find it is. Again, at the very least.....Walnut....  .
Here's a test....I put some pieces of wood together that I would like you to see just how one species of wood can vary by where in the tree it is located and how it was cut with the grain. This is not a trick. This is all one type of wood. Anyone care to tell me what this wood is??. A hint....it is NOT Walnut... . The correct answer is.... natural American Cherry.
